‘We’ll hang on to Koh-i-noor’ says UK PM

The Koh-I-noor diamond once owned by a Sikh maharajah was at the centre of an embarrassing episode for new UK prime minister David Cameron on a goodwill visit to India this week. The 105-carat gem has long been the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels collection in the Tower of London – but Mr Cameron was unexpectedly confronted by a challenge for its return to the sub-continent. BBC Asian Network’s Mela Madness in Leicester and Nottingham!

The BBC Asian Network was in both Leicester and Nottingham on Sunday, for a bumper day of Mela madness. Breakfast host Tommy Sandhu hosted by the Main Stage in Leicester’s City Centre, which enjoyed acts such as Preeya Kalidas, Mumzy Stranger and H Dharmi. The Network’s Station Wagon was also at the Mela, playing the latest beats and entertaining the crowds with its eclectic mix of music and Asian Network DJs. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall met Sikh, Muslim, Hindu and Gurkha soldiers at a ceremony which paid tribute to South Asian troops who fell at the battle of Neuve-Chapelle in France during the First World War. UK’s South Asian population ‘unaware of increased diabetes and heart disease risks’

A recent survey by NHS Choices, the UK’s National Health Service website, has revealed that many South Asians are unaware of how much greater the risk of diabetes and heart disease is for their ethnic group. Only 34 per cent knew that as a South Asian they were much more likely to suffer diabetes and only a quarter understood the increased risks of heart disease. Lack of recognition is particularly prevalent amongst the younger population, with just a quarter of South Asian 16-24 year olds realising that they are at a much higher risk of diabetes and only 15 per cent knowing that they’re at... [Read the full story]
