Summer is finally here which means more sun, more daylight, and more shopping….. With denim dresses, floral prints and jumpsuits, it is clear that the 80s are back – whether we like it or not!

Denim skirts, dresses, waist coats and vest tops are THE biggest trend for summer 2010. The great thing about this fabric is it can be worn as part of a casual outfit, or you can dress it up with a pair of killer heels and funky earrings, and get the boho chick look.

The high street has some great designs for all body shapes. Levi’s have some great pieces or why not try H&M who have a selection of denim vests and dresses at affordable prices.

Here to stay because we all love them, skinny jeans work with everything! So make sure you have a few pairs in lighter colors, this season acid wash colours are a big hit.

Team your jeans, denim skirts and waist coats with a floral top. This pattern hit the catwalks and high street in spring 2010, but you will see more of this funky pattern in the high street this summer. Tops, dresses, bags or scarves – you need to have at least one item in your wardrobe this summer.

If you don’t have the budget to buy yourself anything new, raid your cupboard (or your sisters closet), guaranteed you will find a denim dress lurking behind that floral skirt – the 80s are definitely back!

What started with bodysuits and leotards is now becoming a fully-fledged trend towards jumpsuits, playsuits, and rompers. As a unique style for spring 2010, they won’t be for everyone, but they will offer more options with different styles, prints and looks for both day and night.

Why not team up your jumpsuit with a boyfriend blazer? Continuing to be another fashion favourite for summer 2010, the boyfriend blazer is a simple way to look chic. A slightly oversized jacket or blazer, sleeves rolled up, is every inch looking relaxed and cool.

Whether it is a casual, smart or evening look you are going for these hot tips will leave you looking effortlessly gorgeous.

She’s dressed up the likes of Vikram Chatwal, Malkit Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu. Meet designer Sahiba J Singh who excels in Sikh fashion particularly for the turbaned groom!

Spunky yet subtle, traditional but with contemporary leanings…it’s hard to chose words that best describe Sahiba J Singh’s work. The young designer and stylist who has in the past dressed up the likes of Vikram Chatwal for his traditional wedding and got singer Malkit Singh and politician and anchor Navjot Singh Sidhu to don silk turbans has moved into Chandigarh from Mumbai with her own store (in Sector 7) and label.

“I have so far worked in Mumbai in selling through various designer stores” tells Sahiba, a fashion graduate who went onto intern with ace designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. It was four years back that she rolled out her label that spells the same as her name. Interestingly, while most young designers today choose to go modern in look and perspective, Sahiba has made tradion her unique selling point (USP).

“I’m very proud to be a Sikh and I feel when it comes to formal do’s and weddings, we must flaunt our royal Sikh look”, believes Singh who has a penchant for Sikh fashion particularly for the groom.

“Be it the Kalgi, Sehra or even the Kirpans, I have a sepciality in designing them” mentions the designer who likes to call herself a Sikh Stylist.

Interestingly, Sahiba has also brought out two ‘Sikh Fashion’ calendars that feature men and women in Royal robes. “I feel that we should make the most of our heirloom and fashion. Keeping in aesthetics I have glamourised the turban by using different fabrics and accentuating it with Kalgi’s”, lists out the stylist who takes on made-to-order trousseaux and entire ensembles for the groom.

Even her pret line boasts of a smart mix of traditional charm with contemporary styling. “Even now I am supplying my Bhulkari collection to stores in Dubai in Mumbai”, mentions the designer as we notice an outfit that merges Bhulkari with block printing.

“You have to make smart combinations”, tells Sahiba who also has a range of Cocktail Kurti’s and unstitched suits up for sale at her store in Sector 7.

–

He will also design and launch men’s fashion accessories like cufflinks. “There is lot of intricate embroidery design work in garments. And we plan to have jewellery with embroidery designs.

The Indian saree has been an important part of Indian culture for many centuries. The saree itself has an interesting history, but perhaps the most fascinating thing about the Indian saree is that even today, it is considered one of the most elegant outfits available. The Indian saree exuberates style and elegance.

The sari itself is in fact simply six yards of material but yet the type of sari and the style in which it is worn creates a look which in incomparable to any other type of outfit.

The Indian saree has no limits in terms of a wearer – the saree can be worn by a person of any age and any size.

Often one of the most beautiful parts of the sari is the palu. The sari palu is the end of the sari and normally the most decorated part of the sari. This is as the sari palu is normally draped at the back or front and is key to showcase the sari.

The saree also has part known as the fall which is a material border on the inside bottom of the saree. This can only been seen by the wearer and is only attached for the length of the saree that will be wrapped around the waist. Reason for the saree fall is to add weight to the bottom of the saree and literally provide an elegant fall for the saree.

To wear a saree, two other key items are required. The first is a saree blouse (sometimes also known as choli). The blouse or choli nearly always comes with the saree and either matches the saree in terms of material and embroidery or provides more of a contrast in fashion sarees. The blouse is vital to the overall finish of the saree and can really differentiate the look of one saree to another and from one occasion to another.

Blouses are normally 1 yard long and often provided with sarees as unstitched material to allow the wearer to have the blouse made in any shape or style they like. More high fashion sarees can come with ready made blouses in a free size, which the user can then adjust to their size.

There is no set style to how a sari blouse or choli should be worn, although traditionally sari blouses are well-fitted and reveal the midriff. Traditional blouses also have full opening (via hooks or buttons) either at the back or front.

The modern blouse is often designed to make a fashion statement and it is not unusual to have halter neck blouses, blouses with spaghetti straps, off the shoulder blouses, one shoulder blouses – any look the wearer wishes to achieve, especially for more formal occasions.

The length of the blouse is also up to the individual wearer, very short and bikini-like or longer to cover the midriff. Blouses can either be sleeveless or have sleeves. Any type of neckline can also be made.

The other key component to wearing a sari is having a petticoat or an underskirt. The petticoat is worn underneath the sari and tied around the waist or hip – dependent on the wearer’s preference. The petticoat should be the same type of colour as the sari although an exact match is not essential – as the petticoat should not be seen.

The purpose of the petticoat is to provide a base for the sari to be wrapped around and secured by. The sari petticoat is traditionally tied up tightly around the waist and the sari tucked in at the top, allowing the sari to drape at the correct length – down to the ground. The sari is tucked into the petticoat all the way around. The petticoat is also useful if the sari being worn is made of a more sheer fabric – it means the sari is not see-through.

Petticoats are not often provided with the saree and can normally be purchases separately.

Beauty and fashion go hand in hand. The way you dress, the way you present yourself and the way you carry off your clothes depends on how much you know and relate to fashion. Sometimes we think that we know all about fashion but there are a few fashion myths that ought to be revealed.

Black goes with everything

False! Black works well with dark colours and neutrals although it looks best with another black item thrown into the mix instead of one random piece. Black also looks great mixed in equal proportions with white. But too much black is too harsh against pastel colours so a balancing act is needed. However, black can be your best friend if you want to look slim.

Big girls can’t wear prints

False! Flattering dressing is all about balancing proportions. The safest tip to remember is to avoid extremes. This means that if you are bigger or smaller than average, don’t wear huge loud checks or tiny ditsy florals. Instead, go for medium prints that are eye-catching without being loud.

Baggy clothes make you look slimmer

False! On the contrary, baggy clothes make you look fat. Waisted jackets, frill-edged skirts, scoop necklines and fitted tops are much more slimming than over-sized tunic tops.

Designer clothes are better quality and value

Some items like coats, tailored trousers and evening gowns are worth spending money on because the fit is key. Other things need not at all be such expensive designer stuff.

I’ve got nothing to wear

This negative attitude needs to be changed. Sort through your stuff and you’re guaranteed to find at least three long lost friends that are due an airing. Look through magazines for new ideas about how to wear things and don’t dismiss them until you’ve tried.
