A grateful community remembers fallen Harris County Sheriff’s Office TEXAS deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal. Deputy Dhaliwal loved serving this community and they loved him back.Sandeep Dhaliwal made history as Harris County’s first Sikh deputy. Here’s why the community loved him.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a statement Deputy Dhaliwal was a “bold and groundbreaking law enforcement officer in the eyes of our county, our state, our nation, and around the world, because he sought and received permission to patrol while wearing the outwardsigns of his Sikh faith, including a turban and beard”.
The alleged shooter, Robert Solis, was arrested and charged with capital murder.
Dhaliwal joins Harris County Sheriff’s office in 2009 as detention officer. He’s the one of the first to wear ‘Turban’ as part of his uniform. Dhaliwal had worked at the sheriff’s office for 10 years. He promoted to a deputy in 2015. He had three young children and was a practicing Sikh. He was jovial, kind, a trailblazer for his faith and a beacon for his community.
Officers shared photographs and videos of a “community-led” candlelight vigil held on Saturday to honour the sheriff’s deputy. Many residents also shared tributes to him on social media.”There are no words to convey our sadness,” the sheriff wrote in a tweet.
Sheriff Gonzalez described Dhaliwal, He was the first Sikh deputy for Harris County, as “well-liked and well-respected.”Dhaliwal was also the Director of Homeland Security for UNITED SIKHS. He led operations for Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Maria and various other projects to assist the less fortunate and those in need.
He was trailblazer for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and was easily recognizable in his faith’s traditional turban and beard. Most importantly we asked you to support family because they’re devastated again. He leaves behind three children. They’re trying to be comforted as well and protected during this difficult time. The Harris County Sheriff’s office is like a family and we’all pull together during this difficult time to continue to serve our community because that’s what deputy Dhaliwal did, that’s what he died doing and we’re gonna continue his legacy, a legacy of service and legacy of getting back but we’re going to do it with heavy heart and we ask in community to support us.
In a Press conference Commissioner Adrian Garcia shared his condolences and said,
On behalf of my family, on behalf of the citizens of harris county, we extend out thoughts and prayers and condolences to the dhaliwal family to the sikh community as a whole and to the harris county sheriff’s office family.
This is a truly tragic thing.Death in such a horrific manner should never come to anyone, but it never should visit someone like Sandeep ,”This guy had a heart of Gold.He treated his brothers and sisters in law enforcement as if they were just brothers and sisters. He thought of them before he thought of himself,Thought about the broader community before he thought of himself”. He was a Trailblazer,he was an example for many as a sandeep stepping forward and to become the first sikh deputy. We are proud and his memory always, always remains with me.
